Detox Your Environment

Here are my top 3 tips to  detox your environment:

  1. Upgrade your skincare and cleaning products
  2. Clean and organized your home and workspace
  3. Improve your relationships with the people in your life

Skincare and Cleaning Products

There are a staggering number of toxins in our environment that get into the products we use regularly. It’s difficult to get a number that experts can agree on, but https://www.worldometers.info/view/toxchem/ has done the research from sources like United Nations Environment Program and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Here’s what they say:

“Facts

  • Each and every second 310 Kg of toxic chemicals are released into our air, land, and water by industrial facilities around the world.
  • This amounts to approximately 10 million tons (over 21 billion pounds) of toxic chemicals released into our environment by industries each year.
  • Of these, over 2 million tons (over 4.5 billion pounds) per year are recognized carcinogens. This amounts to about 65 Kg each second.”

I’m not going to get into all the types of toxins because obviously, the list is extensive. In my book: Lifting the Layers to Vibrant Health, I give you a relatively short list of some common toxins in these products to avoid. Sites like www.ewg.org/skindeep are a great resource to be more ‘in the know’ about the products you buy for your body, home, and workspace.

If you’re just starting out, I recommend starting with your skincare products, your laundry detergent, and your household cleaning products. There are so many great products on the market now that actually work really well. If you’re using chemical-laden “big name brand” skincare products, test out a new moisturizer from your local health food store or your local farmer’s market, or try a nontoxic laundry soap with essential oils and botanical ingredients. Some name brands I personally use for cleaning are 7th Generation and Mrs. Meyers. I use Evan Healy, Tata Harper, and Young Living on my skin. If you’re on a budget you can make your own body moisturizer with coconut or jojoba oil and your favorite essential oils, like jasmine, sandalwood, or rose. It is so fun to create a unique scent and have people tell you how wonderful you smell.

Two other silent toxins in your environment that have a dramatic impact on your health are:

Clutter

This one is minimum effort for maximum gain. Get rid of the clutter in your home and workspace. Clutter can take more time and space physically, mentally, and emotionally than you realize.

Taking more time to find things when they’re not organized, causing you to look through piles or move things around to find what you want. This can make you feel like you have too much to do or you’re behind on things. All of this leads to more stress. We know that stress triggers coping mechanisms, like eating, hiding, watching too much television, and so on. Once you get a space the way you want it, go inside and notice how it feels when you enter that space. If you pay attention, you’ll notice you feel lighter.

Relationships

What I’ve come to see is that some people get the diet right and clean up many of the toxins in their environment, then if they still don’t have the health they want, it’s often due to one or more of their relationships.

If you have an unresolved relationship issue with a partner, friend, or relative that’s particularly challenging, begin there. The one that causes you the most stress or is on your mind most often, is there to get your attention in order for you to make a change as soon as possible.

If you haven’t been able to let go of a past grievance or work it out with the other person, enlist someone who can help, such as a therapist or coach. It’s amazing what the right words at the right time can do to change how you feel about a situation. Holding on to past emotional toxins can wreak havoc on your body. It can weaken your immune system, interfere with digestion, and cause sleep loss.

Any small change over time can have a significant impact, whether it’s toward better health or away from it.

Cheers to you and your environment!
